Founder Story

Why I started Clean My Family

I'm Jason. While searching for old family members, I found too many memorials in disrepair and covered with dirt, algae, and time. Those visits changed the way I saw ancestry. A headstone is not just stone—it is a visible link to a real person and a family story.

Through sites like Find A Grave, BillionGraves, FamilySearch, Ancestry, and 23andMe, I discovered new branches of my own family and even helped connect my adopted wife with her blood relatives. That experience made this work personal and gave Clean My Family its purpose.

Ongoing care

Keep memorials maintained year-round

Ideal for families who live out of town. Tombstones should generally be cleaned no more than 1–2 times per year — over-cleaning causes real damage, especially to softer stones like marble or limestone. Our plans reflect that: one carefully timed cleaning per year, or two seasonal visits for memorials that see heavier biological growth.

FAQ

Common questions

Will cleaning damage the headstone?

When done correctly, no — but technique matters more than most people realize. Every cleaning removes a microscopic layer of stone, which is why we only clean when there is a real reason to: harmful biological growth like lichen or algae, or an inscription that has become unreadable. Cleaning "just to clean" is not best practice.

Our process: wet the stone thoroughly first, apply a mild non-ionic cleaner (D/2 Biological Solution or plain Dawn dish soap) with soft natural or nylon brushes only, and rinse completely — thorough rinsing is the single most important step and the one most often skipped. We always test any solution on a small, inconspicuous area before treating the whole stone.

We never use bleach, wire brushes, or pressure washers. Even low pressure can permanently etch older or softer stone surfaces.

Do I need the cemetery's permission first?

Most cemeteries welcome family-arranged cleaning. We recommend a quick call to the cemetery office beforehand. We can advise on what to say if you're unsure.

How long does a typical cleaning take?

A single standard stone typically takes 30–90 minutes depending on size and how much biological growth has built up. We don't rush — the process requires time to be done properly.

I live out of state. Can I still hire you?

Absolutely — many of our clients are out of town. We handle everything on-site and send you clear before-and-after photos so you can see the results without making the trip.

What stone types do you clean?

Each material has its own recommended cleaning frequency — this is one of the most important things to understand before any cleaning takes place:

  • Granite — Durable. Can typically be cleaned every 1–2 years.
  • Marble, Limestone, Sandstone, Slate — Softer and more porous. Conservation experts recommend cleaning no more than once every 7–10 years to prevent surface deterioration. We take extra care with these and will be upfront if a stone should simply be left alone.
  • Bronze — Can be maintained roughly every 3 months. Important: cleaning will not remove the natural blue-green patina, nor should it — the patina is a protective layer.
  • Composite — Pore-free and low maintenance. Often only needs water and a soft cloth.

Location also plays a role. Stones in shaded, damp areas or under trees may need more attention due to faster moss and lichen growth. Stones in dry, sunny spots can often go years between cleanings. For historically significant markers, experts recommend cleaning no more than once per year regardless of material.

What if the stone looks damaged or fragile?

Stones that are already flaking, chipping, spalling, or structurally compromised should not be cleaned — even gentle cleaning can accelerate the damage significantly. This is a firm rule, not a judgment call we make in your favor when we're already on-site.

We assess every stone before starting. If we arrive and determine that cleaning would cause more harm than good, we will tell you honestly rather than proceed and collect payment. In those cases, the right referral is a professional conservator, not a cleaning service — and we'll say so.

If you can send photos in advance through the quote form, we can often flag concerns before making the trip, which saves everyone time and sets the right expectations.

Can you clean multiple stones in one visit?

Yes, and we offer discounts for families with two or more stones at the same location — 10% off for two stones, 15% off for three or more.

What's included in a maintenance plan?

Recurring cleaning visits on a schedule you choose, before-and-after photos after every visit, and priority scheduling. Contact us for a custom plan quote tailored to your situation.

I can't find my relative's grave. Can you help?

Yes. We can walk you through resources like Find A Grave, BillionGraves, FamilySearch, and county cemetery records to help locate the burial site before we visit.
